Dear saints,

One of the most meaningful spiritual practices I have encountered is a Bible study method called Dwelling in the Word.  Essentially, we gather in community, split into pairs, hear a short passage of scripture, and get curious about it together. We ask questions like:

  • What questions would you want to ask a Bible Scholar?
  • What captures your imagination, or causes you to pause?
  • What does this story tell us about God?
  • What’s happening in your life that resonates with this story?

Then we have an opportunity to listen to our conversation partners, and we report back what we heard.  I love this practice because it asks questions that folks can answer in their own words. It opens up the scripture in ways that cultivate imagination, spark curiosity, and invite conversation. Often, the conversations move beyond small talk, going to a place where deep calls unto deep. What I mean by that is we have something important to talk about, and we do it intuitively: God is doing a new thing in all of us, all the time. This Sunday, we’ll invite the saints to Ellis Hall between the services to try on this practice. May it be a blessing to you, as it has been for me.

Peace,
