Dear saints,

If you were asked to return to your roots, to the people and places that formed you, where would you go? For me, there’s no question that it would be the family and friends who live in the Twin Cities, and the stunning wilderness of northern Minnesota. I have just completed a vacation with those people in those places, and I experienced a sense of rejuvenation.

But perhaps more deeply, these summer trips have become an annual check-in of sorts.  Each year brings another cycle of joy and loss, growth and challenge, time with family and a reminder of all the ways that life shapes us, year by passing year. Looking into a smooth lake feels a bit like a glance in the mirror.

What would it would mean for you to return to your roots? Where would you go? How would you have changed over time? What would your childhood friends have to say? For the former scout leaders at All Saints’, you might remember trips to the Boundary Waters of Minnesota as high-adventure journeys that tought you lasting life lessons such as grit, teamwork and mosquito awareness. But we digress.

Ultimately, we are rooted in God’s love for us and for all creation. This sabbath time of summer gives time for us to “be still and know” the presence of a loving, liberating and life-giving God. May we each find a way back to our roots.

Blessings,

Andy+
