Dear saints,
This Sunday we will seek to expand the circle of our friendship and the vision of our community through word and song. To celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. we will be joined by our partners in ministry from Ebenezer Baptist Church whose musicians will help us praise God expansively and joyously. Our preacher-teacher for this special Sunday is Rev. Dr. Mark Jefferson, a professor at Virginia Theological Seminary and a leading preacher in the Episcopal Church. Dr. King’s message was ultimately one of hope for our future and that there was more to our common humanity than anything that might drive us apart. In his final book, Dr. King presents the choice between chaos or community. This parish and this city have chosen community, challenge after challenge, year after year. I pray that we might be so moved by our worship this weekend to be builders of community in this our place and time, seeking to bridge all of the divides that separate us. May God grant us the strength and courage to hold onto such an audacious hope.
Peace,
Simon
