Labor Day Weekend: Food for the City

Sunday, September 5, 12:30—3:30 p.m., Kennedy Courtyard

Join us as we prepare meals for our neighbors experiencing food insecurity. We'll meet in the Kennedy Courtyard for an outdoor cooking session and then head to Atlanta's five Free99fridge locations to clean and restock their fridges and pantries. Whether you can come help cook and box food at the church or want simply to load up your car to deliver food to one of these fridges in the city, we would love to see you there!

Dear saints,

As we get back into the swing of things on the block and at the same time watch the news about the Delta variant, I wanted to share a few words this morning on our approach to the next several weeks. Fundamentally, we remain committed as we have been throughout this pandemic to keeping everyone safe, alongside our efforts to be the church we are called to be. This September and October, you can expect to be invited to a full calendar of events such as Celebration of Ministries Sunday in mid-September — which also marks the beginning of our children and youth formation programs — and our parish weekend at Kanuga at the beginning of October. Both for Kanuga and for activities on our own block, we are keeping to a standard set of precautions for everyone’s well-being: masks indoors; no masks outdoors, unless the activity involves singing; spacing if the gathering includes the under-12s; and food and drink served outdoors only. We will celebrate Kanuga this year, but it will be different, moving much of our activities that are traditionally indoors, outdoors. We will have Sunday school classes for all ages, some will be indoors, others outdoors, others still online. Put more simply: we will continue to gather the saints back together as a church that loves one another’s company, safely, flexibly, and in full recognition that we are not all at the same place in our readiness or ability to be an in-person church at this time. And should you remember nothing else from this week’s e-news message, remember this: we love you, we miss seeing you and we will make our way through this together.

Happy Labor Day weekend!

Peace,

Offered in partnership with the Candler Foundry

Among Western nations, America is among the most religious and the most violent – two facts that are closely linked. Adult Formation: Fall 2021 Session 1 Begins September 12

Sundays, September 12 and 19, 10:20-11:05 a.m., Parish House

We have an extraordinary collection of classes coming your way, and we can’t wait to learn with you, as we invite the Holy Spirit’s transformation in our lives, deepening our Christian faith for the sake of the world.

During Session 1, join us for the following classes and groups:

Parsing the Parables with Lee Osorio and Terry Johnson

Second and Fourth Monday of Each Month, September 13 through November 22, 7:00-8:00 p.m., on Zoom

Jesus used seemingly simple stories to illuminate the complex truths our faith asks us to hold. Join Lee Osorio and Terry Johnson as we reflect on how Jesus's wisdom and wit resonate in our lives today and the path they call us to walk. Each class will include a parable reading, historical context, a meditative time of reflection, and a brief group discussion.

Novel Theology

Wednesday, September 15, 7:00-8:00 p.m., Kennedy Courtyard and on Zoom

Novel Theology is back! September's novel is The Plague by Albert Camus, which tells the story from the point of view of a narrator of a plague sweeping the French Algerian city of Oran. Our facilitator will be Clark Lemons.

Adult Inquirer’s Class

Wednesdays, September 15, 22, 29 and October 6, 23, and 20, 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., on Zoom

The Adult Inquirer’s Class is a six-part introduction to the life of faith at All Saints’, led by our rector, Simon Mainwaring. Each session explores an aspect of the Christian faith and how that faith is lived out in our parish and in the world.

The Journey with the Rev. Karen Evans

Mondays at 11:00 a.m. on Zoom

The Bible is full of journeys: short, long, searching, moving, fleeing and more. Things happen on these journeys: lives are changed, new directions are found; and through it all, "the feeling remains that God is on the journey, too” -Teresa of Avila. The Journey is a Bible study exploring the biblical journeys and what they have to say about our own.

Contemplative Prayer

Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. in P202

“Be still and know that I am God…” –Psalm 46:10

We learn about the centuries-old practice of contemplative prayer, discuss and reflect on readings, and enter into holy silence of centering prayer, offering us a way to build communities of faith that bond us in mutual friendship and Christ’s love. All are welcome, from novices to longtime practitioners.

Education for Ministry (EfM)

Where are you in your “Faith Journey”? If your answer is “I’m not sure,” then EfM is waiting for you!

The Education for Ministry (EfM) program is a four-year program sponsored by the theology school at the University of the South (Sewanee). Not only do we cover the Bible and other church documents, but then we discuss how to use that knowledge to better your daily life.

All Saints’ has more than 400 EfM graduates, including the seven new grads this year! If you are interested in learning more about the program and possibly joining a group, please contact Steve Hines.

La Femme Noire: A Courtyard Concert with Challenge the Stats

Wednesday, September 22, 12:15 p.m., Kennedy Courtyard

La Femme Noire: The Celebrated Woman is an artistic celebration of African-American women and the contributions they have made to classical music as composers, poets, and performers. This event is co-presented by All Saints' and Challenge the Stats (CTS). CTS exists to empower BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) musicians by creating communities devoted to equity in the classical performing arts. They seek to equip audiences and artists with the tools needed to advocate for justice both inside and outside of the concert hall.

Jayme Alilaw’s lush and vibrant soprano voice, working collaboratively with B.E. Boykin’s artistry at the piano will be highlighted by poetry and neatly woven together through the narration of Marsha Wilson and guest poet Theresa tha Songbird. This lunchtime concert tells the story of Black Girl Magic personified!

Tickets are available online or at the door. The cost is $15 for general admission; no cost for students, children, and teens.

Serve as an Usher During the 11:15 a.m. Services on Sundays

The usher ministry invites volunteers to serve as friendly faces and provide a warm welcome to all who enter our church doors. Our ministry is one of hospitality and assistance to all worshipers, giving extra attention and help to visitors and those with special needs. As a team, ushers distribute bulletins, collect offerings, provide attendance counts and guide worshipers to communion. Each 11:15 usher team serves a month at a time, for four months during the year. If interested and have questions, please contact Charlie Rigby. We look forward to serving with you!
Donate Vases to the Sunday Callers

The Sunday Callers invite donations of vases. The preferred size is 8-10 inches tall, with a pinched mouth. Clear glass is preferred over colored glass. Please no bud vases! If you are unable to drop them off at the church, please call Ellen Porter at 404-909-2408 to arrange a pick up.

Conversations and Compline

Sunday, September 26, 7:00-8:30 p.m., Ellis Hall and the chapel

The evening concludes with music and prayer to send us into the week refreshed and encouraged by connections God is revealing among us.

Would you like to volunteer during our Annual Parish Weekend? We would love your help! As we look forward to our time together, the planning committee invites volunteers to serve both before and during this special weekend. If you are interested in helping, please contact Jill Gossett, Director of Parish Life, at jgossett@allsaintsatlanta.org.
Giving
"Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.” —2 Corinthians 9:6-8

Your gifts to All Saints' make a big difference in this vibrant parish serving the city.

The ushers are collecting offerings at each of the services. For the 9:00 a.m. service in Ellis Hall, please make a gift in the offering basket near the door. Thank you so much.
