The Roberson Project’s Campaign to Build an African American Community Archive

The Roberson Project on Slavery, Race, and Reconciliation has launched a project in partnership with present and past residents of Sewanee’s historic Black neighborhoods to recover, preserve, and share their histories. The University’s archival and special collections are a rich and deep repository of records and artifacts that collectively tell the story of this institution and community through the eyes and experiences of white students, teachers, administrators, alumni, and others, but it has preserved very little evidence of the lives and experiences of Sewanee’s Black residents, who contributed vitally to the life of this community and university. This presentation will talk about how the Save Sewanee Black History Project has been designed and executed to address and repair the effects of this historic injustice.
