St. John’s Gospel has been described as a loving meditation in the shadow of the Cross. This explains, in part, Jesus’ flowing monologues as he sets his face toward Jerusalem. The cross also plays a central role in liberation theology, as God takes up the cause of the marginalized and the oppressed. Indeed, God on the cross shows us that Jesus speaks for, with, and to the crucified class, inviting us to do the same.
He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” (Mark 8:34)
