Concerts at All Saints'

Concert Series

A Message from the Director of Music:

Dear Music Lovers,

I am beyond excited to begin my tenure this program year (2024/2025) as the Director of Music here at All Saints' Episcopal Church!  A great deal of that excitement comes from the honor of continuing to grow a great legacy, as established by Directors of Music Emeriti Elizabeth and Raymond Chenault and my predecessor Dr. Kirk Rich. With the help of All Saints' landmark Buzard pipe organ, these fine artistic directors have brought countless beautiful performances to our block in Midtown Atlanta and well beyond.

Beginning in October, All Saints’ will add to its long history of music excellence with a series of jazz concerts featuring nationally-known artists.

The first Jazz at All Saints’ concert, scheduled for Friday evening, October 11, will feature the Gary Motley Quartet, led by pianist Gary Motley, whose exceptional skills as a performer, composer, and arranger have made him an indispensable leader in the nation’s jazz community. His compositions have premiered at national and international festivals, and his achievements have been lauded by multiple organizations, including the National Endowment for the Arts. Well known to music audiences locally as both a headliner and an accompanist, Gary is also beloved on the Emory campus as a professor and the founding director of the University’s Jazz Studies program.

The Joe Alterman Trio will share the spotlight at the second concert, set for Friday, November 22. Its leader, Atlanta native Joe Alterman, has performed at venues from the Kennedy Center and Lincoln Center to famed jazz clubs Birdland and Blue Note in New York as well as Eddie’s Attic in Atlanta. His skills and his joyful approach to music have been praised by such jazz greats as Les McCann, Ramsey Lewis, and Ahmad Jamal. In addition to his mastery of jazz piano, Joe’s creativity can be seen in his leadership of the revamped Atlanta Jewish Music Festival, now known as the Neranenah Festival.

Jazz royalty Carmen Bradford takes the stage in the All Saints’ series on Saturday, February 22, accompanied by Reginald Thomas on piano. A 2024 Grammy Award winner for her vocals on “Basie Swings the Blues—the Count Basie Orchestra,” Carmen was born with music in her soul as the daughter of legendary cornetist Bobby Bradford and renowned vocalist and composer Melba Joyce. At age twenty-two, she was discovered by Count Basie, beginning a connection with the Basie orchestra that has lasted for decades. Her distinctive voice graces film, stage, television, and radio productions as well as performances with other orchestras across the country. Though she calls Atlanta home, Carmen also teaches at Michigan State University. Her pianist, Reginald Thomas, is the coordinator of the internationally recognized Northern Illinois School of Music jazz studies program, the director of the NIU Jazz Orchestra, and a featured artist in his own right.

On Friday, March 14, the multi-talented Matthew Kaminiski and his quartet will wind up the first season of Jazz at All Saints’. And “wind up,” he will, for Matthew is the crowd-pleasing organist of the Atlanta Braves, cited by envying broadcasters as “the coolest guy in the world.” Versatile on accordion and piano as well as organ, Matthew is a member of a variety of musical groups—a western swing band, a polka band, and the Latin salsa orchestra Orquesta McCuba. He also writes music for plays and sings in a rock band. You can be sure that fan-favorite ballpark songs as well as jazz classics will highlight the evening’s offerings.

The concerts will be held in the church beginning at 7:00 p.m. and will be followed by a reception for the artists in Ellis Hall at 8:30 p.m.

Tickets are available online or at the door. All concerts are $30 for general admission and $15 for students (unless otherwise noted). Children and teens under 18 years of age may attend all concerts at no cost. Season passes are available for $175 for general admission and $50 for students.
