Sundays, February 27 through April 3 from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. in the Ross Room

with Dr. David Pacini and the Rev. Sarah Stewart

Join us as we explore biblical stories central to the liturgy of the Great Vigil of Easter. Each of our six sessions will consider God’s movement in the history of the world’s redemption and in the unfolding of our lives as people who are saved by the incomprehensible mystery of divine love.

Our textual sequence of paradoxes includes:

  1. Creation and Flood: Pleasure and Displeasure
  2. Binding of Isaac and Red Sea Deliverance: Incongruous Promise, Improbable Fulfillment
  3. Saving Wisdom: Imprudence and Providence
  4. Heart of Stone and Valley of Bones: Hearing and Refusing to Hear
  5. Renewed and Regathered: Reassembled, Not Restored
  6. Earliest Easter: Amazement and Fear

Weekly conversations to nurture faith formation for newcomers and parish members alike will encourage individual and group participation in All Saints’ Ash Wednesday and Easter liturgies. Our Lenten season of growing together in person will conclude with a celebratory communal meal in Eastertide, as possible.

About the Instructor

"Dr. David S. Pacini serves as Professor Emeritus of Historical and Philosophical Theology at the Candler School of Theology at Emory University. From the start of his tenure at Candler in the 1980s, Pacini was focused on teaching historical theology in order to help students deepen their respect for other faith traditions and recognize the inherent connectivity between all faiths. He also coordinated the Theology and the Arts concentration as part of the Master of Divinity degree program, chaired the Historical Studies in Theology and Religion program in Emory’s Graduate Division of Religion and served on a number of university committees.

Pacini’s research explores the boundaries and intersections of literature, art history, psychoanalytic theory and philosophical theology in modern European thought. His books, The Cunning of Modern Religious Thought, and Through Narcissus’ Glass Darkly: The Modern Religion of Conscience, respectively address the epistemological and moral dimensions of modern philosophical theology."
