We now have additional parking spaces available at the Bank of America parking deck. This parking option is available to us on Sundays from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The entrance to the parking deck is off of North Avenue, across the street from the Negril Village restaurant.

No validation tickets are needed; the automatic gates will open for you when you pull up.

Dear saints,

We are excited to celebrate the Day of Pentecost with you on Sunday. You might call Pentecost the birthday of the church, because we honor the gift of the Holy Spirit, and the ways God sends us out to be instruments of love, justice, and compassion in the world. Here’s one way to think about it: God is passionate about restoring and reconciling all creation, and the Holy Spirit empowers us to participate in that mission. The Church does its best work when we are aligned with God’s project, the Holy Spirit sends and empowers us to do that work, and this is the day when we celebrate her arrival. Hence: Pentecost is the birthday of the church.

Pentecost is a major feast for us, with flowing banners, a birthday cake reception in the courtyard, and an invitation to wear red, which is the liturgical color associated with the Holy Spirit. I have a friend who wears Chuck Taylor All Stars (with painted flames) on Pentecost. If anyone can top that, your reward will be great in heaven.

To give you a teaser for the sermon, I’m going to explore why the Holy Spirit matters. Catherine LaCugna gets it right in her book God For Us, writing:

The Holy Spirit and the Doctrine of the Trinity “[Are] ultimately practical doctrine[s] with radical consequences for Christian life… God is not an impersonal substance… nor a being whose primary love is self-love. The God…who is immune to our suffering, does not exist. The God too hidden for us to know, or too powerful to evoke anything but fear, does not exist. The God who watches us from a distance as an uninvolved impartial observer, does not exist. The God conceived as a self-enclosed exclusively self-related triad of persons does not exist. The God who keeps a ledger of our sins and failings, the divine policeman, does not exist. These are all false gods, fantasies of the imagination that has allowed itself to become detached from the rule of God’s life disclosed in Jesus Christ. What we believe about God must match what is revealed of God in scripture: God watches over the widow and the poor, God makes the rains fall on just and unjust alike, God welcomes the stranger and embraces the enemy.”

In other words, God cares about your actual life, and we have work to do. Happy birthday, Church!

Peace,
Andy

Walk the Labyrinth

The Labyrinth at All Saints’ Ministry hosts monthly Sunday afternoon labyrinth walks this spring. Labyrinths are beautiful ancient designs found worldwide, symbolizing pilgrimage journeys, a path to God and the Divine within. Labyrinths are archetypes for our time, blueprints for our soul, and vehicles for embodied meditation. The labyrinth walks that take place in Kennedy Courtyard (rain location: Ellis Hall) are accompanied by live music. When planning your visit, please allow approximately 20 minutes for your walk.

Giving
Giving: Give a Gift to Honor or Remember a Loved One

Did you know you can give a gift to All Saints' in honor of a recent graduate (or a new couple, birth, baptism, etc.)? The average gift is $25. Send a gift and mark it "Memorials and Gifts" fund. Or click this giving link. The church will send your honoree a note acknowledging the gift and will list their names in the All Saints' Day bulletin in November. What a great way to lift someone up and support All Saints', too. What does the church use these gifts for? The Memorials and Gifts Fund supplies needed items for our worship life. Recent examples are: choir robes, clergy vestments, communion kits, re-covering the library chairs, and a seasonal banner for the procession. It is much needed and always appreciated here. Thank you!

Special thanks to Charlie Boyd and the Memorials and Gifts Committee: Patrick Becker, Edgar Callaway, Winifred Davis, Wayne Keith, Nixon Lowe, and Leila Pratt.

Wear Orange Lunch ‘N Learn with Lisa Hagen

Sunday, June 5, 11:30 a.m., Budd Hall at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 435 Peachtree St., Atlanta

St. Luke’s Episcopal Church Faith & Advocacy Network (FAN) continues our tradition of commemorating victims by observing Wear Orange the first weekend in June. This year’s observance includes a luncheon at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 5, hosted by St. Luke’s FAN, The Temple’s Rothschild Social Justice Ministry and Ebenezer Baptist Church.

The Wear Orange movement began in 2013 to honor Hadiya Pendleton, a South Side 15-year-old who was shot dead that January. Pendleton was slain just days after performing at President Barack Obama’s 2012 inauguration, and her death made national news. In the wake of Pendleton’s death, her friends wore orange (the color hunters wear to signal others not to shoot them) to remember her and to raise awareness about gun violence. The movement has since grown into a national movement, that has been observed for the past few years at St. Luke’s.

Now that in person services are possible, orange will be seen during the regular summer service at 10 a.m., followed by a Lunch ‘N Learn in Budd Hall. The speaker will be Lisa Hagen, the Pulitzer Prize winning WABE journalist from the “No Compromise” podcast.

Hagen will take us into the movement that has pulled gun culture and the politics surrounding it to the far right.  She will tell us about some of the people she met in reporting for the podcast and how they used social media to create a movement. There will be a chance for us to learn about their methodologies and how we might use them to change the conversation surrounding gun violence prevention.

All are invited to attend. We hope to see you in Budd Hall at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 435 Peachtree St. Atlanta, GA.

News & Announcements
Introducing Our New Communications Team

We are delighted to share that we now have a new communications team at All Saints' starting in the next few weeks. Heather Cotton will be our new Director of Communications and will begin her work here on June 15th. Heather will lead all of our communications strategy, manage our social media accounts, oversee our website and marketing, and produce all of our non-liturgical print publications. Heather is joined by Katie Presley, who will serve as the Parish Program Coordinator. She starts this week and will serve in this role for the next year until she is ordained to the priesthood. Katie had previously been helping support our youth ministries. Under Heather's direction, Katie will publish our weekly e-news, keep our website updated, share with Heather in our photography work, and she will also produce all our worship bulletins and be part of our liturgical and pastoral team. There are more details from Heather and Katie below. Please do join me in welcoming them into these new roles.
Heather Cotton was born in Atlanta and grew up on the Georgia coast in Brunswick. She completed her BA in Liberal Arts with an emphasis in English and Secondary Education at Armstrong Atlantic State University and her MS in Strategic Communications at Troy University. Having worked in corporate and nonprofit communications, Heather has experience in marketing, public relations, social and digital media management, brand management, community engagement, and media. She and her husband, Ross, have two children, Nikolas McGill and Lauren McGill who attend college at Massachusetts Maritime Academy and Kennesaw State University respectively. Although they will miss Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church in Brunswick, Ross and Heather are excited about relocating to Atlanta. In her free time, Heather enjoys kayaking, paddle boarding, photography, and volunteering.
Katie is joining our communications team as Parish Program Coordinator after serving for several months as the part-time youth program assistant, working with the youth program as we transitioned to a new Director of Youth Ministries. She graduated with her Masters of Divinity from Candler School of Theology in 2021, after serving as an All Saints' seminarian for three years. Her previous work at All Saints' includes facilitating various small groups, coordinating our acolytes, and various liturgical roles to include preacher, lector, and verger. Katie is a Candidate for Ordination to the Priesthood in the Diocese of Atlanta and a Chaplain Candidate in the US Army.
