Dear saints,
I have long been familiar with the Charles Dickens’ quote ‘charity begins at home’, but it was only this Thanksgiving, leafing through a magazine in our family’s home in Los Angeles, that I discovered the second half of the sentence, ‘and justice begins next door’. Our new partnership with Emmaus House and the community of Peoplestown is an embodiment of the hope implied in the whole of that sentence. ‘Charity’ which has its root in the Latin ‘caritas’ speaks to the work of the heart we are called to do within ourselves as followers of Jesus. People who come to church looking never to change, never to grow, never to be challenged are most often disappointed. The church, our spiritual home, is where we prepare our hearts and our lives to live out the call for God’s justice to be known upon the earth. Justice requires us to move, to look beyond ourselves, not simply with our words or sentiments but through our actions. I invite you to reach out to me if you would like to help our work of justice to grow ’next door’ in Peoplestown. There are opportunities for ministry as a reading and math tutor, and in the Bridge of Hope program offering practical support to families in the neighborhood. The world will know we are Christ’s disciples through our love. Consider loving in a new way this year ahead.
Peace, |
|

2022 Annual Canvass: Courageous Giving
“The first time I gave to All Saints’ a few years ago, it was for a practical reason. I was a ‘check- in- the- collection- plate’ type gal, but I realized (yes, it finally dawned on me) that the church needs the pledge info to plan its budget. In the subsequent years, I made a pledge and the pledging process has become more spiritually meaningful for me each year.
Thank you so much.”
