Dear saints,

I am thrilled to be able to announce that Emily Halbert will be joining our staff as the new Director of Children and Youth Music next month. For the past several weeks, parishioner Meg Fogel led a wonderful search committee of fellow parishioners as we discerned together the shape of children and youth music in this place. I began with a meeting with about 20 or so parents so I could hear their views. The committee followed up with another parent gathering later in the process. We heard two core messages.

First, a deep sense of gratitude for all that All Saints' has been gifted with over the past quarter of a century through Karol Kimmell's remarkable leadership here. It is clear that the music ministries she has led have been pivotal in drawing families to All Saints' and keeping them here. Community has been built, faith formed and relationships deepened. What a treasure that has been.

Second, we now wish to build on this strong and abiding foundation. There are very few churches that have full-time positions for a music educator. We were looking for a gifted choral director for all sorts of children with a wide array of music abilities and backgrounds. We also looked for someone who would be able to nurture the faith formation of our children and youth as part of our talented formation team of Kathy, Luke and Jenny.

I believe that Emily was exactly who God intended for us to find in our search. She brings to us wonderful gifts as a teacher and musician, with seven years of full-time teaching experience in schools and additionally in the church. We envision growing opportunities for music-making here for our parish's children and youth as well as opening ourselves up to the wider community. Music brings people together and when we join our voices it can be transformational to hear how the sound of that togetherness becomes something new. There is an exciting chapter of growth ahead of us.

Emily will join the staff on May 12, which gives her time to work with Karol as we embark on a smooth transition of leadership. Just a few days later on May 20, Emily will be joined by Scott Lamlein, our incoming Director of Music. I am delighted that they will essentially begin their service at All Saints' at the same time. It will be a tremendous gift to this church to see adult, youth and children's music work together as one.

In the midst of all these new beginnings will be a fond and poignant farewell. More to come from me on that front. For now, please do save the date for a farewell for Karol Kimmell on Sunday, May 19 following the 9:00 a.m. service.

There is a time for everything and the saints keep marchin' on!

Peace,

Welcome to Emily Halbert, our new Director of Children and Youth Music

Greetings, All Saints'!

I am so excited to be joining your vibrant congregation in the heart of one of my favorite cities. Words cannot express how eager I am to step into this role and have a title that unites so many facets of myself. For years, I have been Emily the Music Teacher, Emily the Choir Director, Emily the Episcopalian and Emily the Singer. To have the honor and privilege to serve your community, your families, and your children and youth by uniting all of the parts of who I am is truly a blessing. The Children’s and Youth Music at this church is thriving and the work Karol has put into this role and congregation is inspiring. I am grateful to the committee, Simon, staff and clergy for trusting me.

As a music educator and choir director, I am led by Zoltán Kodály’s philosophy that “only the best is good enough for a child.” I believe children and youth can do amazing things and it drives how I teach, sing, program, rehearse, build relationships, etc. Choir directing is my vocation, however, I do not teach music; I teach humans. For me, music is the vehicle to invest in the next generation and to help build a better world.

Being able to unite my music education philosophy with my spirituality is truly unique. As I step into the Director of Children’s and Youth Music position, I am excited to spend my first few months this summer meeting and getting to know each of you and your families. Please say hello and introduce yourself!

Here are some fun facts about me: I have two cats, Coraline and Persie (Persephone). I love traveling and my current goal has been alternating between one new state and one new country every year. I have a healthy obsession with trying to make everything from scratch and I have an unhealthy obsession with book clubs.

Blessings,

Emily Rebecca Halbert

Photos of the Week

Greetings, saints! This past weekend at All Saints’ we had a wonderful experience worshiping in community. On Saturday, we celebrated our Earth Day Service in Piedmont Park, where we thanked God for the beauty of Creation by bringing the joy of our Christian community out into the neighborhood.

We were led in worship by the Rev. Dr. Andrew Barnett (pictured), who recounted an inspiring folktale encouraging us to pitch in locally in ways small and large to responsibly steward the natural environment in a sobering era of climate crisis.

Then on Sunday, we cheered on our graduating high school seniors, several of whom delivered inspiring sermons at both our 9:00 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. services. Our Associate Rector of Formation, The Rev. Dr. Jennifer McBride prayed for the soon-to-be graduates following their homilies as their proud families, loved ones and our assembled community looked on. Sincere thanks and congratulations to Hillary Yankey, Joe Srinivasan, Nora Gaynor and Paul Frilingos.

We would love to get to know you! Our community looks forward to you joining us for upcoming services and events throughout the year! For more information visit allsaintsatlanta.org/calendar
