Dear saints,

A week ago, I gathered with parishioners who are a part of St. Catherine’s Chapter, one of the many women’s groups at All Saints’ who get together on a regular basis for fellowship and sometimes a program. As we went around the room introducing ourselves, one person shared how important the friendships in this group have been to her and her family. When she and her spouse visited the church fifteen years ago, they liked the worship service but were unsure if this was the place for them, until she went to a St. Catherine’s social gathering and the next Sunday had the experience of seeing the familiar faces of her new friends.

Friendship is something that we might take for granted at All Saints’, because it seems to come so easy for us as a community. This is a parish that likes a good party. We love to get together, be it for a Newcomers gathering at someone’s home or at a construction site for a Habitat for Humanity build. But scholars of congregational studies tell us that perhaps the greatest challenge for most churches today is how hard it is to make and sustain real friendships there. Add to that the fact that we are living in an increasingly secular age and in a time of frenzied busyness, one sees why fun and meaningful friendships are vital for the future of the church.

It may seem out of order in Lent to highlight our penchant for parties, but Jesus himself liked a good party and always used the occasion to cast the net of friendship as wide as possible, intentionally including people who were normally left out. And it was as he made his way toward the cross — the time we mark during the season of Lent — that He said to his disciples,

“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

“You are my friends" (John 15:12-13).

Yours,

Photo of the Week

This past Sunday at All Saints' was Midtown Assistance Center (MAC) Sunday, where we shined a light on MAC's work providing prevention assistance to the working poor in midtown and downtown Atlanta, focused on aiding in the most important basic needs: housing, food, and clothing.

Executive Director Jennifer Jobson addressed the congregation at both the 9:00 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. services, describing several positive changes at MAC in recent years, supported by All Saints' and inviting our parishioners onto a tour of the office and pantry space on Spring Street. Show your support for MAC by participating in the Lenten Food Drive, which concludes on Sunday, March 17 (more information is available in the "This Sunday" section of the newsletter above)!

We would love to get to know you! Our community looks forward to you joining us for upcoming services and events throughout the year! For more information visit allsaintsatlanta.org/calendar

GIVING

“We are grateful for the households who have made planned gifts to All Saints' (gifts you make while you are alive to be given after your death). These gifts have made 120 years of All Saints’ a reality for all of us. Consider what your life would be like without the church and conversations we have here that pull us toward what really matters. Contact me to begin a discussion about making a planned gift.”

Bonhoeffer's Worldly Christianity and Its Relevance Today

Wednesdays in winter, beginning February 21 – March 20, 6:45 p.m. - 8:15 p.m., P 305/306 and on Zoom

Many U.S. Christians are drawn to Dietrich Bonhoeffer—the twentieth-century, German, pastor-theologian and Nazi resister—because he courageously lived what he believed. While plenty of Christians admire Bonhoeffer as a historical figure or an exemplar of Christian faith, far less do the harder work of reading his theology. After gaining an overview of his life and work through the documentary, Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Pacifist, Nazi Resister, this course, led by The Rev. Dr. Jennifer McBride, will introduce participants to some of Bonhoeffer’s most compelling theological concepts and explore their relevance for Christian discipleship and public engagement today. To participate in this class via Zoom, please visit allsaintsatlanta.org/links and enter password “AdultFormation2024”.
