Dear saints,

'There is a time for everything', says Ecclesiastes. The block discernment process started in late 2018, continued with a year of learning together in 2019 and then slowed due to a pandemic that threw everything up in the air. This year is now the time for us to ask one another as a parish how God calls us to be the church on this city block for the generations to come. Starting with a launch event in Ellis Hall led by me on Sunday January 21, you will be invited to attend large-gathering listening sessions in Ellis Hall, sign up for at least one smaller home gathering in February, March or April, complete a survey, or if you'd prefer you can simply pull aside a member of the block steering committee and let them know what you are thinking. The message I hope you keep on receiving is this: we want to hear your voice.

The question of the future of our block is a long-term question, one we are asking for ourselves and for the future generations of All Saints'. In the 30 to 40 years ahead, we can expect much to change about the life of this church as indeed much will change about churches across this city and the nation. Sunday morning church attendance will most likely become less normative. Affiliation with religious organizations like ours will probably continue to diversify and shift. Fewer people will think of themselves as Episcopalians or Presbyterians or even religious. At the same time, more people might become part of the life of a church like ours through values-driven activities such as working alongside former refugees or children in need. Over the next several decades, I suspect that Midtown will become an even richer tapestry of working and living community. And in the midst of all of that, we shall remain a faith community committed to finding the love and grace of God in the demanding, yet deeply rewarding, world of relationships lived at depth and with purpose.

The invitation is for you to help us discern the future not simply of this patch of real estate, but the future vitality of this community of people constituted as we are within the love of God. We need your voice and your vision. We need the best that you can offer All Saints' at this exciting time in our history. I am eager to learn all that you will have to offer.

Peace,
