Dear saints,

This weekend around 200 of us will descend upon the unsuspecting populace of Hendersonville, N.C. for All Saints' 41st annual parish weekend at Kanuga Conference Center. For those who can remember Kanuga weekends of years gone by, yes we will still have a scavenger hunt, attempt to mislay some of the youth in the corn maze, witness an otherwise dignified assortment of adults lose to a gaggle of kids in a kickball game and spend many a lazy hour on the rocking chairs overlooking the lake. Some things don't change.

Kanuga has been a spiritual home for this church ever since my beloved predecessor, Harry Pritchett, said, "Why don't we give that a try?" And we are... still trying.

Kanuga is just one of the great array of All Saints' traditions that I have come to love and cherish over the years. Traditions help bind us to our past. Through them we are reminded that we tread our way upon a path that others have traveled before us. It is much like the beautiful sentiment of the Latin: Lex orandi, Lex credendi. That literally means: the law of prayer is the law of belief, or put more succinctly, "Praying shapes believing." We are formed by what we keep on doing.

Playing shapes belonging. The traditions we enjoy in this place, the stuff of our parish life, is how we play together as a church. We need to find joy in one another. We need to laugh together, sometimes at and with each other. It is as my college girlfriend offered to me as parting advice before I left the country to take up a missionary call: "Don't take yourself too seriously." She was right. And although I might still fail taking that advice, I am still trying.

So, why not give something a try that might bring a lightness to your spirit? Like that wonderful saying Gregory Boyle SJ offers to former gang members in his care and all of us alike: "God is too busy taking delight in us to have time to be disappointed." Take delight in the world! There is so much to be delighted in. And when you find your joy, bring it as a gift to the people that love you on your best and on your worst days. Let us lay it on the altar together—a church of God's great delighting!

Peace,

Photo of the Week

This past Sunday at All Saints’ we celebrated the Blessing of the Animals in honor of St. Francis of Assisi! Feathers, fur and scales were all well-represented as parishioners escorted their pets, pet pictures and stuffed animals into Ellis Hall for a special blessing and service celebrating God’s creation.

The Rev. Dr. Andrew Barnett, our Senior Associate Rector (pictured), gave the homily, which focused on all the care our animal companions provide to us! Then, our Rector, The Rev. Dr. Simon Mainwaring, strolled through the aisles to greet parishioners and their pet pals. Karol Kimmell, our Director of Children and Youth Choirs, and the Children’s Choirs provided musical accompaniment, performing “Blessed Assurance” among other hymns. The Commission on LGBTQ+ Ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta invites you to our annual Pride Eucharist, a celebration of love, acceptance, inclusivity, and unity. This service is open to everyone, regardless of who you are or where you come from. We extend a warm welcome to all!

Confirmation and Holy Eucharist with Bishop Robert Wright

Each candidate has been prepared to make a public confession of their faith in Christ, whether as a candidate for confirmation, for reception into the Episcopal Church or for reaffirmation of Baptismal vows. There will be no Welcome Table service or meal on this Sunday—we invite attendees of that service to join for this service!

Trunk or Treat and Holy Boo!-charist

Sunday, October 29, 4:45 p.m. - 7:00 p.m., Ellis Hall and the Church

Join us as we celebrate an early All Hallows Eve at All Saints' with our Trunk or Treat and Holy Boo!-charist Celebration! We will start with our Trunk or Treat at 4:45 p.m. following a Holy Boo!-charist service, with music from our Children's Choirs beginning at 5:30 p.m. Dinner will follow in Ellis Hall at 6:00 p.m.! The festivities will be held at 1200 Peachtree Promenade Central, near Colony Square and the Woodruff Arts Center, and will feature fun, food, entertainment, and live and silent auctions. You are invited to make your reservation for the party online by using the ticket and sponsorship information you received this week. And you can make the auctions even more spectacular with your auction donation—gift certificates, sports tickets, gift baskets, fine art, jewelry, crafts, or a designated time at a beach, mountain, or lake home. Use your imagination! For an auction donation form, please contact Jill Gossett, Director of Parish Life, at jgossett@allsaintsatlanta.org. Look for the Habitat Soiree table in the courtyard after the Sunday services and watch this space for more details about our celebration and its real purpose—continuing All Saints’ commitment to our city.

The All Saints’ campus incorporates numerous individual HVAC systems operating on a unified control network. Maintaining these systems represents a significant annual expense for the parish, and we aim to expand the knowledge within the Buildings & Grounds Committee as we take on new initiatives.
