Dear saints,
Tradition has it that the origin of the Lessons and Carols service was in part the brainchild of Bishop Benson of Truro, who in the late 19th century was desirous to get his Cornish congregants out of the pubs at Christmas time and into church. You have to admire his ambition! The carols that were chosen were mostly sung at that time in people's homes. It was music people would have known and loved. No special singing qualifications required.
This Sunday at All Saints' we will live into that all comers spirit with our annual non-anxious Christmas pageant at 9:00am followed by the masterful Bob Edge as he leads a forum in Ellis Hall that will take us through some of the musical high points of this holy season, music we will know and love. For all of the polish and packaging of this time of year, meant to ensure that things are just right, the message of Christmas is a theology of all comers. It is a time for us to recall that to name Jesus as Emmanuel, God with us, is to set the door of the church ajar for all, freed from our anxieties over how we might perform, thus opening us to be formed into the shape of love God had intended for us all along.
Come to church this weekend and help the Advent light grow.
Peace,
