A Note From the Rector

Dear saints,

We live in times when we must learn to look for hope. Amid a pandemic that has now claimed over 100,000 lives in this country and in a time where millions are facing unemployment, hope may seem in short supply. With all of that weighing in our minds today, America these past several weeks has seen revealed once again the real and present danger that African American men have to contend with every day, as families and communities mourn the deaths of Ahmaud Arbery and George Floyd. This coming Tuesday evening, June 2nd, I have invited fellow leaders of Midtown churches to join me in sharing a conversation that will examine race, church leadership and the life we share in following Jesus Christ. I have invited my fellow clergy in the Peachtree corridor of churches to join me in that conversation because I believe we do indeed have work to do: to ask one another how it is that we have got to this place and look back as far as we must into our own stories as faith leaders and back into the stories of our own faith traditions. Reconciliation, the tenet that lies at the heart of the Episcopal Church's stated mission in the Book of Common Prayer, is not possible without truth. As our liturgy teaches us, peace does not come by any other road than the one that goes from confession to absolution. These stories that we see in the news are not somebody else's, they are our's; they are mine, and they are yours; they are God's, and in that divine story we indeed do have a hope we can trust in. May God give us grace to see one another with heart's filled with love and with our eyes set upon God's kingdom where all people shall be free.

Peace,

An Update from Youth and Children's Ministries

Dear saints,

It brings me great joy to share the news that All Saints' Youth Minister, Joel Smith, will be continuing on staff in a full-time capacity beginning June 1. This move from part-time to full-time staff member follows his recent graduation from Georgia State University, where he completed undergraduate studies in psychology and religion. With many years of experience as participant, counselor, and staff leader at Camp Mikell, our regional Episcopal camp, Joel brings a wealth of experience in building Christian community among teenagers through facilitating warm and inclusive environments where friendships can flourish and faith can take root.

For the past three years, Joel has served our middle and high schoolers and their families with enthusiasm, humor, and a genuine passion for walking with young people as they find their place within the Body of Christ. In addition to providing a steady presence for ongoing Sunday youth programs, Joel has revitalized our acolyte teams, pioneered the Wednesday Night Supper counselors program, developed a vital ministry presence on social media, and built strong bridges with our children's ministries through participating in choir trips and events with Club 45 (our 4th and 5th grade group).

Joel has often been described as embodying a peculiar gift of winsome connection with youth alongside a depth and maturity beyond his years. Even and especially in these uncertain times, we are thrilled to lift up Joel in his ministry, as we continue building the "village" together. I give thanks for this opportunity to continue learning and growing with Joel as we journey together into the future God has prepared.

Congratulations, Joel!

Peace,

Zack+

An Update from Refugee Ministries: Thank You for your Generosity!
Since sheltering in place began on March 13, Refugee Ministries has received an astounding $8,000 in donations from 22 parishioner donors and a $600 gift from St. Luke's Chapter. We continue to provide financial assistance to former refugee families in need of emergency food, and next month we will begin providing emergency rent and utilities assistance now that we have enough funds. We also raised over $10,000 in one day from 25 donors for the educational fund for Mang Bor Cin, the daughter of our 2016 resettlement family from Myanmar. Mang Bor Cin has been accepted to Georgia Tech. She will start this fall and her family is overjoyed that your generosity will allow her to pursue her dream of becoming a physician. If you're interested in learning more about her story, watch this video interview she made with All Saints' parishioner and Refugee Ministries volunteer Steve Heckler. For more information, contact Louisa Merchant at louisam@allsaintsatlanta.org.

Break Bread with the Men of Covenant Community
(on Zoom)
Many parishioners have asked how they could help with the Monday dinners for Covenant Community during this difficult time. Although it will be a while before visitors will be allowed to join the men to break bread, the following protocol has been suggested by CCI's Executive Director, Johnathan Davis. For the foreseeable future, dinner would need to be dropped off at the front door on Spring Street. After dinner the men would very much like to do a Zoom meeting with the parishioner so that everyone could virtually get together. Available dates are: June 8, 15, 22, 29.  For more information, contact Barbara Blender at bblender@bellsouth.net.
