Dear saints,
Some years ago, John Leland, who writes for the New York Times, wrote a book called Happiness is a Choice You Make. He wrote the book built around six New Yorkers whose lives he immersed himself within for a year, all 85 years old or older. One was a filmmaker, another a Holocaust survivor and microbiologist, and with them a maintenance worker, a teacher and a businessman. The lessons for leading a happy life that Leland raises up in the book are somewhat to be expected: be grateful, adjust to challenges, accept that loss is inevitable, keep on learning, keep on contributing, keep on changing, pay attention.
While it’s true that these lessons are not earth shattering revelations, they do speak to me of a certain disposition that I have found to repeat itself in people I’ve met through the years. These individuals have been no richer, or more successful, or renowned than others, neither did they tend to have elevated positions or higher status. Instead, the common denominator was that they were people who had come to terms with who they were, and as such were able to pay attention to others because they had let go of the need to pay quite so much attention to themselves.
I deeply value church work because it has offered me the privilege of being in the presence of people like that often. One of them is Karen Evans. Karen has been serving for the past several years as a member of our staff as Parish Priest Associate, a role that has led to Karen spending sacred time with many of you at the hospital bedside, or leading a Bible study, facilitating bereavement ministries, preaching, and leading worship on a Sunday morning. She has been the sort of presence that brings to mind that gorgeous Maya Angelou poem where she writes ‘We have loved each other in and out of time’ - God to Karen, Karen to us, us to the world. It’s how the priesthood is supposed to work, and Karen has embodied that vocation with elegance and with a profound care and love.
Karen is retiring from her role as Parish Priest Associate this Sunday, and she will celebrate the Eucharist and pronounce a blessing from the altar that invites us to ‘honor everyone’. Nothing could be more appropriate, because that is exactly what Karen has done. For my own part, to have had an experienced rector just steps away when our offices were down the hallway from each other in Egleston, was an immense gift. As I would come for a visit, I would close the door and share with her whatever trial or tribulation I was facing, knowing that Karen had seen it many times before. Thankfully, Karen is not leaving All Saints’, just slipping into the pews to join that august and rather lovely cohort of retired clergy who call All Saints’ their church home. We are so much richer a place because of them.
As for the lessons to be learned from those whose decades on this earth surpass our own, I hope that by the time I reach my own retirement I might finally have time to learn them! It is the conundrum, is it not, of the busy lives we lead: while we know we should see the bigger picture, events can speed by us so relentlessly that we just can’t seem to make it up to the mountain top to look down and see the view we are racing through. In that light, John Leland’s life lessons become more like practices, spiritual disciplines even: be grateful, adjust, accept, learn, contribute, change, pay attention. If I can do one of those in a week, I’m well ahead of normal. There is no grand spiritual master sitting in the rector’s chair, I can assure you. But I can try. Turns out, happiness is a choice I can make. The trick is to keep on choosing it, over and over again. To the end.
Thankfully, our choosing is never a solitary thing, for the One who looks upon on us always from the mountain top of full sight beholds the precious human life buzzing around below them and delights in it.
‘The sun has come
The mists have gone
We see in the distance our long way home
I was always yours to have
You were always mine
We loved each other in and out,
in and out, in and out of time’.
Peace,

Announcing a New Director of Operations and Facilities Manager
We are delighted to share that our current facilities manager, Jeff Couch, is assuming a new role as Director of Operations. Jeff has been taking care of things on the block with our buildings and grounds for the past three and a half years, working alongside our fantastic Buildings and Grounds Committee members. In his new role as Director of Operations, Jeff will oversee our facilities, repairs and capital improvements, as well as our security, sextons, and technology. All areas we are keen to keep on improving. To assist Jeff in this work, we are very happy to be able to welcome back to All Saints', Zach Thomas as our facilities manager. Zach had worked for us previously. During his time away from us, Zach worked in the renewable energy industry, completing extensive training in electrical, mechanical, and instrumentation, all expertise and experience that will support All Saints' well over the coming years. Zach's first day will be August 10 and I invite you to join me in congratulating him and Jeff on their new roles whenever you next see them on the block.

Jesus on the Front Page
Sundays through August 16, 9:00 a.m. – 9:50 a.m., P305
In this weekly Sunday morning discussion of a current news story, participants reflect on how the world of that story calls us to live as faithful people. In a nonpartisan reflection, we explore how we might be called to pray differently, think differently, or act differently in our private and public lives. We ask where God might be found in this story, as we notice signs of grace, engage the scriptures, and learn to name our lament as well as our hope. Contact Clark Lemons at clemons@emory.edu.
