Dear saints,

I write today to share the happy and sad news that Andy Barnett will be leaving All Saints'. His last Sunday with us will be Sunday May 3, which will bring to a close nearly seven years of ministry here. Andy follows in a long tradition of this parish serving as a place that raises up leaders for the wider church, as he travels west to take on the rectorship of another All Saints, in Beverly Hills, California. He and Morgan go with our blessing and love, and with hearts filled with gratitude for all he has offered in the service of this church.

I want Andy to have the opportunity to say in his own words what it has meant to be here, and I will have an opportunity to speak on behalf of the parish at his farewell following the 9:00 a.m. service on Sunday May 3. For now, though, I would offer how profoundly thankful I am for Andy's leadership here. He has brought light and life to so many parts of our parish. Many of us are able to look back on seven years of remarkable growth in how we have worshipped together because of him. Who would have believed that Episcopalians could sway in the pews to the sound of "Precious Lord"? Yet, there we were, with Andy beaming on the piano in what is undeniably his happy place. On our behalf, Andy has taken at least half of the local population to lunch, part of a strategy for growth he has been instrumental in seeing us achieve in our newcomer ministries. You may not know that more behind the scenes Andy oversees our pastoral care ministries, has shepherded our young adult community as it has taken root here, and is the chief station master who makes sure all of our trains run on time across our busy worship schedule. Just ask the guy if he enjoys putting a spreadsheet together, and I promise you he will quiver slightly as he answers. Beyond all of this doing, however, has been a much deeper and more lasting gift - the person he has been in our midst. Generous, compassionate, a person who loves to be part of a team, a man with a good and faithful heart. We could not have asked for or expected more. He answered the call to serve the people of God in this place in 2019, and since then he has given us his all.

And so, Andy, it is over to you - now as you begin to say your goodbye, and as you travel across the country to lead your own congregation. You go with the thanks of a grateful parish. May the Lord bless you and keep you, my friend.

Peace,

Dear saints,

I love you. I am profoundly grateful. And, you have blessed me.

I love you. I love the quirky joy and the deep connections that define this Christian community. Here is a place where women’s chapters have gathered for decades, and the men’s group has discovered new and varied ways to roast protein. Here is a village where children rest their chins on the altar while parents take photos and senior saints take delight in all the young families leading worship. Here is a band of Jesus followers that has never given up on loving and serving our neighbors, especially the least among us. Here is a congregation that loves to sing, and is not above mild liturgical violence to ensure that we sing the correct version of “There’s a Wideness in God’s Mercy.” Here is a gathering of friends that helps us multiply life’s joys and divide life’s sorrows, simply by being together, knowing that we are not alone.

I remember attending the evensong service we held for All Souls, seeing a person who had recently lost her husband of many years, and thinking I’d like to give her a hug as we all lit our candles. But I couldn’t get to her, because so many of you were already on your way, and the hug train stretched on for several rows. The choir ran out of music to sing, and still you kept lighting candles and loving each other. So then our amazing organists had to play for six business days, and it was all so, so worth it, and that is All Saints’ in a nutshell.

I believe that the key to parish ministry is to love the people into the kingdom, and I have tried my best to do that. But I didn’t know that you were going to be so committed to loving me back. We have journeyed through some real highs and lows- the stuff that comes with being human– and I am so glad that we’ve done it together.

I am profoundly grateful. I love inviting people into ministry, and I have called many of you with some doozies. Thank you for saying yes to (most of, but not all of) my wacky ideas. Thank you for being a place that is rooted in Anglican tradition, and open to the improvisation of the Holy Spirit in our midst. Thank you for launching the Welcome Table service, and building an extraordinary young adults group, and contributing so many hours to our worship life, and inviting children and youth right into the heart of worship. Thank you for welcoming over 400 newcomers who have visited in the past four years. Thank you for being open to new expressions of music. Thank you to my dear friends and colleagues who have formed a community that works, plays, and laughs together. Except for the person who put the life-sized Larry David cutout in my dark office at night. That was not cool, and revenge will be mine, in Christ.

Finally, you have blessed me. All Saints’ has an extraordinary, Spirit-led vocation to call and send God’s people. I think of all the folks who are currently discerning God’s call on their lives. I love that we have engaged hundreds of community members through our core ministries. I remember the ways you have helped me learn and grow as a priest. I think of the All Saints’ alumni who now lead parishes of their own, and I’m proud to be in that number. You have blessed me with nearly seven unforgettable years. You have shown what church can be and do. Gratitude, deep gratitude, abounds.

So, as Morgan and I prepare for our move to California, and as I prepare to lead All Saints’ Beverly Hills, please know this church has meant so much to us both - more than words can say.

I love you. I am profoundly grateful. And you have blessed me.

Sincerely,

Future of Our Block
