Dear saints,
A few years ago, our then communications director passed along to me a book entitled, Be Known For Something. The book is about church marketing - honestly not a subject that gets my passions aroused, but it offered an important message: that many churches aren’t known for anything relevant in their communities.
It's been a minute since I last leafed through that book, but I thought of it again a couple of weeks ago on our recent pilgrimage to South Africa as we visited Orlando West, a neighborhood in Soweto, Johannesburg. Soweto is one of those place names that evokes a certain sense of history, especially for students of the late 20th century’s flurry of pro-democracy activity from the first open and free elections in South Africa to the collapse of the Iron Curtain. It was in Soweto, indeed in the neighborhood of Orlando West, that Hector Pieterson was shot and killed at the age of twelve during the Soweto uprising and massacre in 1976 - bloodshed that supercharged the struggle against apartheid for the two decades that followed. While our pilgrim group stood in Pieterson Square we briefly met Hector's sister who is next to her brother's body as he was being carried from the scene, captured in what became one of the defining images of the apartheid regime's brutal oppression of its people. Soweto became a name etched into the public imagination across the world, a word synonymous with the struggle for freedom.
Right down from Pieterson Square, Vilakazi Street is what makes that particular neighborhood unique - the only street in the world home to two Nobel Peace Prize laureates, Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. It was quite something to be able to be in the Tutu home with Naomi Tutu, who was co-leading our pilgrimage, and listen to her memories of wandering up Vilakazi Street to the Mandela’s home. I suppose that if you’re going to live on a street that is known for something, be known for the Noble Peace Prize winners you might have bumped into on the walk to church or school.
What do you think we are known for on our street, at 634 West Peachtree?
As I drive around Midtown and come across a view of our beautiful church spire from North Avenue, with sky scrapers towering above, I wonder what people see. Beauty. Hope. History. I know through years of observation from my office window that we are known for our remarkable magnolia tree that never seems to fail in slowing people down to take a picture. In an urban setting now so full of glass and steel, that explosion of green and growing life is truly arresting.
Over the years we have been known as ‘All Saints, all sorts’ - a kind of tribute to the feel of our parish that wants to set a door open for people who are to some degree or other different to one another. We have been known as the church that hosted the funerals of victims of AIDS in the 1980’s and that welcomed Alan Paton, South African author and anti-apartheid activist, and Dr. Benjamin Mays, then President of Morehouse College, three decades earlier as a kind of living demonstration of the possibility of racial integration in a deeply segregated time.
Today, we are known for our work among refugees, for our dedication to clothe children with dignity, for the tireless ministry of the Midtown Assistance Center and Covenant Community, all of which glorify God, much as our outstanding music programs and worship life do. We are known for jazz concerts that fill a 120-year-old church with people from all corners of the city and beyond. We are known for our values of justice, inclusion and welcome. We are a church in the city, open and outwardly facing toward the city God calls us to live among and love.
That is what we were known for yesterday and what we are known for today; what of tomorrow?
The ongoing work we are doing with our architects, Perkins and Will, is of course focused on dirt and buildings, but its primary concern is the life of this church and what we will be known for on our street thirty and more years from now. This Sunday at the forum hour following the 9:00 a.m. service, you are warmly invited to join your fellow parishioners as Perkins and Will share all that they have heard from the parish thus far that has that future church in mind. From MAC, to Threads, to Covenant, to our staff, to the Garden Guild, to the Music team, to the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation, to our parishioners living at Canterbury Court, and hours of meetings with task forces and the vestry, All Saints’ is being listened to through and through. And as we offer to one another what we see ahead of us as followers of Jesus in this place who choose to serve our neighbors, and make glorious music, and grow in fellowship, and raise our children in the faith, and open our community to the people around us, we hear how it is that God is calling us into the decades ahead.
This is our opportunity to name what we want All Saints’ to be known for in future years as people wander down our street. Make sure that you share what is of highest value to you about that future because every voice matters.
I pray, whatever we end up naming for one another, that what we are known for in the years ahead will speak loudly of the God whose power working in us is able to do far more than we can ask or imagine, a God of boundless compassion and mercy. The world remains greatly in need of knowing such a God. May we be a place where that God may become known, and trusted and loved.
Peace,

Composer of the Week
This week the choir presents music from the Fauré Requiem; the entire work will be performed in concert by our combined choirs on Saturday, March 21. Gabriel Fauré was a master of the French mélodie whose work bridged the gap between Romanticism and modernism. Unlike the dramatic, fire-and-brimstone settings typical of the 19th century, his Requiem in D minor, Op. 48, is celebrated for its serene and comforting “lullaby” quality. First performed in 1888 at La Madeleine in Paris, the work notably focuses on themes of eternal rest and peaceful transition. The masterpiece culminates in the ethereal “In Paradisum,” where a soaring soprano line and shimmering organ accompaniment create what Fauré himself described as a “deliverance from the burdens of life.”
