Dear saints,

Our Psalm assigned for this fourth Sunday of Lent is the well-known, much beloved Psalm 23 that begins, “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters; he restores my soul. He leads me in right paths for his name’s sake.” Many of us might know this Psalm by heart and recite it when we need comfort in our personal lives. Many people associate it with funerals, since it’s one of the scriptures most commonly read at the service given this powerful line, “Even though I walk through the darkest valley” — the valley of the shadow of death, as the King James Bible puts it — “I will fear no evil, for you are with me.”

Because so many of us at All Saints’ are struggling with all that is going on in our country and world and are asking the church to provide comfort, I was encouraged when I read one commentator who pointed out that the Psalmist actually has his own political context in mind when he describes the Lord as his shepherd — the One who provides, protects, and delivers him from his distress. Although “shepherd” seems to be a straightforward pastoral metaphor, in the ancient Near East and in the Old Testament, kings were imagined as shepherds, and so the metaphor has a political dimension as well. The king’s main duty was to provide necessary resources for his people to live, including the most vulnerable in society, but they often failed to do so. When unjust earthly rulers couldn’t be depended on because they placed their own desires above the people’s needs, the Psalmist defiantly proclaims, “The Lord is my shepherd — not you! — and I shall not want.” God is the one on whom we can and must depend, sings the Psalmist. God cares and provides for the vulnerable and for me. God acts on behalf of the people. God wills life — providing food in green pastures, still waters from which to draw a drink, and protection even when we walk through the darkest valley.

For the Psalmist, the darkest valley he and his community are experiencing includes the forces of evil that seek to do harm — political and spiritual powers that destroy instead of affirm life. It is a valley of death, of extreme darkness, the place where evil is on display in all its horror. And, so, it is also the place where we are understandably overwhelmed by what we see and are confused about what to do. But even and especially there — at the place of our deepest overwhelm, anxiety, and confusion — the Psalmist invites us to “fear no evil,” to turn our fear into a prayer and affirmation of trust: “For you are with me.”

I know that many of us have a firm belief that God is with us in difficult times. It seems to be a reasonable affirmation of faith for us Episcopalians who like to be reasonable. But I think the Psalmist affirms even more than that. The famous last line of the Psalm, “Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life,” would better be translated, “Surely goodness and steadfast love will pursue me all the days of my life.” In the Psalms, when “enemies” are mentioned (as they are here — “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies”), the enemies are always the ones in pursuit, threatening to hunt down the Psalmist. But in Psalm 23, the writer reverses this common theme and instead recognizes that God is like a “Hound of Heaven” pursuing us (to quote the 19th century poem by Francis Thompson). God is not simply with us in the dark in some seemingly static way. God is in pursuit of us, chasing after our good like a hound on a hunt, like a lover determined to win over the beloved. Even in the presence of enemies, God prepares a candlelit table for us right there in the dark. That table has enough light for us to see that we are being sustained and renewed day by day. The host of this meal provides the same thing the shepherd provided at the start of the poem: food at the table; drink that overflows; and protection in the form of oil, a sign of welcome and honor. These expressions of nourishment, rest, and hospitality are all given and enjoyed under threat, “in the presence of my enemies.”

So, the writer of Psalm 23 invites us not only to be confident in God’s presence with us as we walk through the darkest valley but also invites us to look for the ways that God is pursuing us and our good in these dark times. Perhaps these last few weeks of Lent are inviting us to be on the lookout for all the various ways God is pursuing us and our good, insisting we rest with him in green pastures or walk with him beside quiet waters, so that God might do for us the work we cannot do ourselves — restore our souls.

With admiration and love,

Choral Music for the Soul: Fauré Requiem

Saturday, March 21, 2:00 p.m., Church

Join us as our Adult, Youth, and Junior choirs present this sublime work of choral music with orchestra, along with other choral masterworks. It is an amazing moment to calm the soul with amazing music and experience our musicians of all ages working together to remember our Lenten journey. Visit allsaintsatlanta.org/concerts for tickets. $25/general, $15/student.

Composer of the Week

This week the choir presents music from the Fauré Requiem; the entire work will be performed in concert by our combined choirs on Saturday, March 21. Gabriel Fauré was a master of the French mélodie whose work bridged the gap between Romanticism and modernism. Unlike the dramatic, fire-and-brimstone settings typical of the 19th century, his Requiem in D minor, Op. 48, is celebrated for its serene and comforting “lullaby” quality. First performed in 1888 at La Madeleine in Paris, the work notably focuses on themes of eternal rest and peaceful transition. The masterpiece culminates in the ethereal “In Paradisum,” where a soaring soprano line and shimmering organ accompaniment create what Fauré himself described as a “deliverance from the burdens of life.”
