A Note From the Rector

Dear saints,

Happy Thanksgiving! I do hope, however you spent yesterday, that you had opportunity to give thanks for all that nourishes your soul and gives you life. In what has been a singularly challenging year, the practice of gratitude is needed more than ever. We don't do so to gloss over our cares or concerns, or the very real griefs and losses some of us have withstood. We give thanks because that is how we come to trust that in the end all of life is a gift, all of it provisionally held, all of it to be cherished in the here and now while we are present to it.

The greatest gifts are gratuitous, offered with a love that asks nothing in return - words that describe our Threads ministry at All Saints' in many ways. Over the next three months, Lori Guarisco, our Threads ministry coordinator, will be taking a much-deserved sabbatical, finding renewal and rest among her family on the west coast. She goes with our prayers and blessing, and with deep thanksgiving for over a dozen years of Threads ministries that have put into material form that great biblical hope that the children of God might be clothed with righteousness.

Thanks be to God for Threads and for all that we give to others of this indescribable gift called life.

Peace,

 The Journey
with the Rev. Karen Evans
Wednesdays, 10:00 a.m., on Zoom
The Bible is full of journeys: short, long, searching, moving, fleeing and more. Things happen on these journeys: lives are changed, new directions are found; and through it all, "the feeling remains that God is on the journey, too" -Teresa of Avila. The Journey is a Bible study exploring the biblical journeys and what they have to say about our own. We're currently exploring the journeys of Christmas in Matthew 1-2 and Luke 1-2. All are welcome. Please click here to register.

Sin: Our Eyes Gravitating in Choir with David Pacini
Sundays, December 6, 13, and 20,
9:00-9:55 a.m., on Zoom
The current clamor for reconciliation, however vibrant, often overlooks the issue of sin. When sin does receive mention, it is usually cast as a set of specific transgressions. It is altogether tempting to account ourselves free of such transgressions when confessing to one another. But from Paul, Augustine and Calvin to Jonathan Edwards, sin has been understood as a distortion of seeing from which none of us escape unaided. As St. Frances de Sales put it, "Our Devotion is colored by our own likings and dispositions." Rarely do we probe the ways in which our conceptions of sin, especially in the Augustinian tradition, not only inform but also legitimate institutional racism. In the course of this class, we will undertake just that: discerning the role of the conception of sin in legitimating institutional racism.
