 Rector
A Note From the Rector

Dear saints,

A few months back, writer Avivah Wittenberg-Cox wrote a piece examining what seven countries that were all faring well in response to the coronavirus had in common: they were all led by women. It recalled for me that snow day in Washington back in 2016, when the only U.S. senators who showed up for work were women, which in turn reminded me of the day in my childhood when a neighborhood dad appeared angrily at our front door because I had pushed his son off his bike - something I imagine I will have to answer St. Peter's for at the pearly gates. My sister, five years my senior and as fierce as anything, stood resolute, insisting that no, there was no one else he could talk to, and that she couldn't possibly imagine that her little brother would have done such a thing. She was a human safety barrier, and I was in awe.

The point of all of this is the preamble to a simple invitation: let us pause this week, to give thanks for the leadership of women among us, especially the diminutive yet towering figure now passed, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The world our daughters will become women within is so much more open to them because of Justice Ginsburg's legacy. We should celebrate that singular achievement and re-commit ourselves to the work that still remains for women and men to have an equitable footing under the law. I don't say that as a legal scholar but as a person of faith, trusting that when God created male and female equally beloved and infinitely valued in God's image, that that was a theology worth sticking with.

Next month, on Sunday October 11th, at 9:00am, another remarkable leading woman in the judicial world, our own Sally Yates, will join Natosha Reid Rice and I in conversation in the latest of our Faith in the City series. I do hope that you can join us for that conversation, and discern your next small step that seeks to live out your faith for the building of a world where all of us are valued.

Peace,

Sunday
