A Note From the Rector

Dear saints,

I wonder which memories of being out in the world you have been calling to mind these past weeks? I have been remembering the sun-filled and luxuriously full days together of the All Saints' holy land pilgrimage back in February. It is very hard to believe that it was just a few months ago. It seems like another time altogether, and in a way it was. I was remembering that last night, as I spent a wonderful hour with the Novel Theology reading group and expressed to them how keenly I miss seeing my fellow saints on the block. Those memories of Israel and Jordan continue to feed me as I recall our time together and that we live in a big and wondrous world. I also get timely reminders of that every few weeks when Emmanuel Bwatta and I exchange messages about how the pandemic is affecting them in Tanzania. The good news is that Lake Tanganyika Theological College is growing, including its female student population which All Saints' directly supports. Staying in touch with Emmanuel has helped me keep my perspective. Our own staff's journey through this pandemic has also given me signs of promise, including the great, new adventure of our associate music director, Giles Brightwell, which you will read about below.

As Hemingway wrote, 'The world is a fine place and worth fighting for'. I am so glad of your company as we continue to commit to that, with the launch of this year's canvass, in prayer and service, and in all of the life that we still share together.

With thanksgiving,

Bon Voyage to Giles Brightwell

It is with both sadness and excitement for him that I share the following news from Giles Brightwell, our associate director of music. We give thanks for all that Giles has given through the ministry of music at All Saints', and wish him God's speed for all that lies ahead. Peace, Simon+

'It was with mixed emotions that I got in touch with Simon to tender my resignation. It was a privilege to come to work at All Saints' alongside my colleague, Dr Kirk Rich and it has been deeply rewarding to work with the All Saints' Choir and to play the stunning Buzard organ for services. It has been a joy to meet the many interesting people who form the congregation at All Saints'. I am grateful for the time I have spent with you and for all you have given me. I would particularly like to thank Simon and Andy for making this transition so smooth for me.

Over the last few months, the COVID-19 pandemic has made me assess my priorities. Being 4,000 miles away from my mother and from my family at this time has been a cause for concern, and it has become clear to me that I need to return to live and work Europe.

I shall be moving to Amsterdam, having accepted an offer to work with a friend from Houston days. My work will consist of a wide variety of musical styles: cabaret and musical theater on the one hand, and church music and teaching on the other. As you might imagine, I am very much looking forward to this new adventure, and, not least, to being able to lead a car-less life. Please do get in touch if you are planning to be in Amsterdam or nearby.

Please keep me in your prayers as you are in mine.

Welcome to Canvass 2021: Lifting Through Generosity!

Join us on Sunday, September 20 for a 9:00 a.m. message of thanksgiving and inspiration from the Rev. Martha Sterne on Zoom during the first session of our Faith and Money series. Please click here to register.

Your pledge card is in the mail. You can also make your pledge online right now (click here to pledge). Pledging is one of the many things we do together to support the All Saints' community and God's work in the world. Take some time to prayerfully consider the level of support you plan to offer to All Saints' in 2021. The church bases its planning and budget on this pledging process. Please join us in making a gift that is meaningful to you. This is a time when we need one another and we agree with Simon and our clergy that All Saints' is called to serve as a beacon of hope and a source of tangible support for so many.

All Saints' has a long tradition of being a generous parish. If you have questions, let us hear from you.

Thank you,

Danny and Louisa Johnson

Remembrance: A Non-Violent Protest
Sunday, September 20, 9:00-9:55 a.m., on Zoom
Keith Willey and Schaune Griffin have been following and supporting the work of the Equal Justice Initiative for over a decade. With the opening in April 2018 of the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama, which commemorates victims of lynching in America, EJI expanded from its work in prisons and courtrooms to a mission to acknowledge our history of racial terrorism and advocate for racial justice. The Memorial to Peace and Justice challenges visitors to carry the work of truth and reconciliation from the Memorial in Montgomery to their own communities and take on this work at the local level. In their presentation, Schaune and Keith plan to discuss what drew them to participate in the NAACP DeKalb Remembrance Committee and the Fulton County Remembrance Coalition and to describe their work and experiences as members of these organizations.

The Journey is a Bible study exploring the biblical journeys and what they have to say about our own. Our first journey is with the Israelites as they travel through the wilderness to the Promised Land. Please click here to register.

For the foreseeable future, dinner can be dropped off at CCI's front door on Spring Street any time during the day. After dinner the men would very much like to do a Zoom meeting with the parishioner(s) so that everyone can get together online. Please click here to inquire about providing a meal and Barbara Blender will be in touch to help coordinate.
