 Rector
A Note From the Rector

Dear saints,

A couple of weeks ago we started a new broadcast at church called 'On Reflection'. It's a three-minute piece of social commentary from one of our clergy drawing together what they see in the world around them and theology. We follow it with a 20 minute freeform conversation between us. I love it because it requires us to think on our feet in public view - it keeps my brain exercised and reminds me of those Oxford college days arguing over everything and anything in the pub in the evenings. Our clergy conversation was more genteel than I remember them being in my 20's, but the principle was the same: listen and respond as well as you can. In fact, that was the topic of this week's reflection - the challenge of seeing the other side.

It would be a great discipline for us in these coming weeks to practice that kind of discipline of listening to the other side of things and try to hear what is often so easy to overlook. In fact, it seems to me that Anglicans have a special calling in an election season to help gather friends and neighbors into a via media, or middle way. The middle way is the place where change becomes practical. It's where people finally meet each other and figure out how to walk on the way ahead because of, not in spite of their differences.

I am deeply grateful that All Saints' is a place where difference is welcome and can thrive. I for one have much to learn from those who see the world differently; and if you think that might be you, please give me a call this week, or don't be surprised if I call you! After all, the Body of Christ would be a colorless place if we all agreed.

Blessings to you all, my fellow via media pilgrims!

Peace,

Sunday

This initiative stems from the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, which includes an iron column for every county that experienced a documented lynching, as well as a second column outside of the memorial that waits to return to each county ready to wrestle with their history of racial injustice and lynching.
  • On September 27, join parishioner and vestry member Dante Hudson to explore how the Black Lives Matter movement is essentially the child of the Civil Rights movement, but with a focus on policing and criminal justice reform.
  • On October 4, join Elliot Watts for an important discussion of the legacies of redlining, and its implications for the intergenerational transfer of wealth, health outcomes, and poverty, with strong implications for racial justice in our city.
