 A Note From the Rector
Dear saints,
A novel I once came across described a protagonist who on returning home every evening would find the dimensions of his house slightly changed. Sometimes his kitchen would shrink a little. Other times an entirely new room would sprout forth only to disappear again the next morning. It feels a bit like a description of life in a pandemic. Schools are open and then they close again. For a moment we might feel like we're discovering some sense of normalcy, only for events to take us over once more. It is both strange and familiar.
Turns out that 'strange and familiar' is a fairly faithful way of seeing the life of the church. Of course, this program year the familiar pattern of our worship and formation classes take on the strangeness of proximity on a screen rather than in person. Yet the strangeness of following Christ has always been there. The church is meant to be strange to this world, a promissory note for the kind of belonging and being that life constituted in Jesus looks like when shared with others.
Our preacher-teacher this Sunday, Diana Butler Bass, is wholly familiar with the strangeness of church, having visited and preached in and written about hundreds of them in her time. We give thanks that she will add All Saints' to the list this weekend. I invite you to join me in welcoming her and to listen to what the Spirit has to say afresh to the body of Christ for this place and time.
Peace,

The MICAH Project
Sundays, August 23, August 30, and September 6,
9:00-9:55 a.m., on Zoom

Becoming Beloved Community with Ruby Sales on Sunday, August 23: In 1965, Episcopal Seminarian Jonathan Daniels was working for civil rights with 17 year old Ruby Sales, and other activists in Hayneville Alabama. When a shotgun-yielding county deputy tried to shoot Ruby, Daniels pushed Ruby aside and took the full blast, giving his life to save hers. Now 55 years later, Ruby joins us to share that story, and the impact it has had on her life.
Deep in Her Heart: A Tribute to Connie Curry with Bob Miller on Sunday, August 30: Connie Curry, longtime All Saints' member, was our most "boots on the ground" civil rights activist. Connie was an honors graduate of Agnes Scott College, a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and a Fulbright Scholar, but she was and is better known as an unrelenting force for civil rights. Among many other things, she was the only white member of the Executive Committee of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee when it was founded in 1960 during the sit-in movement.

One Step Beyond Caution: The Ministers' Manifesto of 1957 with Ethel Ware Carter on Sunday, September 6: An Atlanta pastor asked how the pulpits could be silent when the Georgia Legislature was discussing closing the public schools rather than integrating them. A group of ministers responded publicly changing the climate in the city. Join Ethel Ware Carter to learn more about this pivotal moment in history.

Coming Soon: Sacred Ground Dialogue Circles
The Episcopal Church has declared a church-wide initiative of racial healing, reconciliation, and justice. Called "Becoming Beloved Community," the initiative includes a 10-session curriculum entitled "Sacred Ground: A Film-Based Dialogue Series on Race and Faith." The Sacred Ground curriculum consists of videos, assorted writings, discussion, and two core books, Jesus and the Disinherited by Howard Thurman and Waking Up White by Debby Irving. The MICAH Project (TMP) plans to initiate Sacred Ground dialogue circles composed of parishioners committed to approximately six months of learning, listening, and engaging one another in a brave space to talk about race and faith. To learn more about Sacred Ground, click here. In order to gauge interest in these small-group dialogue circles (no firm commitment needed yet), we ask that you add your name to the list by emailing us at sacredground@allsaintsatlanta.org.If you have questions, please contact the Rev. Sandwich Make with Children's Ministries
Drop off sandwiches on Sunday, September 6, 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
The pandemic has only made it even more important to help feed our neighbors, so let's make as many sandwiches as we can for Church of the Common Ground! Make PB&J, turkey with cheese, or ham with cheese and put each sandwich in its own individual bag. Then, stack those into your empty bread loaf bag and bring them to church for a drive through drop-off. Make sure to write down how many sandwiches you made and we will keep a running tally board for everyone to see! For more information, contact Kathy Roberts at kroberts@allsaintsatlanta.org.
An Update from Midtown Assistance Center

General
Congratulations to Andy and Hannah!
We are thrilled to congratulate the Rev. Dr. Andrew K. Barnett and Hannah Hastings on their wedding which took place on their front porch in Atlanta on August 8. Several hundred people joined join via Zoom, and they're pleased to share the bulletin here. It's hard to get married in a pandemic, but they were determined! Because a zoom wedding doesn't hold legal weight, they also held a legal ceremony on a mountaintop at sunrise near Asheville, and received a lovely blessing at the Cathedral in Asheville. We are pleased to offer our prayers for their marriage and our congratulations on this momentous occasion.
