A Note From the (Associate) Rector
Dear Saints,
This This Fourth of July Weekend I give thanks for our country's better angels. My own father found asylum here after years as a political prisoner in Myanmar. As a child, my friends' curiosities delighted in my "alien" dad, but his learning curve was steep-while a graduate assistant at the University of Tennessee, he was once reprimanded by the infamous coach Pat Summitt for his unwitting reticence to accommodate her players' schedules! Her firm yet ultimately understanding response was emblematic of the gracious hospitality he received time and again.
Thus I lament the ways our systems have exchanged curiosity and hospitality for neglect and disregard. Even as Christians faithfully disagree over complex matters of immigration law, I believe the heart of God is grieved over the imminent suffering at our border. For those interested, Episcopal Migration Ministries has listed ways to engage this crisis here, and there is a local opportunity listed below (see Service).
As the baptized, our first citizenship remains in the Kingdom of God. We are merely resident "aliens." As we enjoy this weekend of renewal and celebration, taking stock of the freedoms we enjoy, may we find courage to live out the Kingdom of God in all we say and do.

Jesus on the Front Page
Sundays, 9:00-9:55 a.m., P307, Parish House
Facilitator: Charlie Cork
Join this ongoing discussion of the news of the day and how we are called as Christians to respond in the public arena, in our private lives and in our prayers. For the next two weeks, Charlie Cork will continue to take us back to the first couple of centuries C.E. The front page story might be from the year 135, when Roman armies under the command of Julius Severus retook Jerusalem and sacked it, or the year 122, when the Roman emperor Hadrian ordered the construction of a 70-mile defensive wall during a visit to Britain.
For more information, contact Ethel Ware Carter at ethelware@aol.com.

with Barbara Thompson
Sunday, July 21, 11:15 a.m.-12:00 p.m.,
Ellis Hall, Parish House
The suffering of innocent children during times of war and while living in detention and refugee camps is compounded by serious interruptions in their education. In response, All Saints' parishioner Barbara Thompson helped create a professional development program for teachers in crisis environments called the Aspire program. It is one of many educational efforts that have grown out of All Saints' Refugee Ministries. In June, Barbara and a team of educators launched Aspire Africa in Kigali, Rwanda, for teachers from Somalia, Congo, Sudan, Uganda, and Rwanda. On Sunday, July 21, Barbara will share stories from the Aspire program and her Kigali experience. Learn more at
