Dear saints,
My husband and I were living in Italy when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert Kennedy were killed. We were living in Canada during the last years of the Vietnam War.
Both times, we were invited to stay abroad, but we made the conscious decision to come back to the United States. In a time when our country’s flaws and troubles were news around the world, we were still Americans.
I watched the tall ships, the Blue Angels flying over New York harbor, and the fireworks all around me. But the July 4th event that I liked best was a concert, here at
Canterbury Court, given by a volunteer choir. It wasn’t a show. It was a community gathering. We sang along on several of the songs and clapped for our friends. And much of the music asked for God’s blessing on our country.
There is a difference, though, between asking for God’s blessing and assuming we have it because we are God’s chosen people. That is a trap at least as old as the ancient
Israelites. The prophet Amos delivered the word of God, “You alone have I favored, much more than all the families of the earth…” But to paraphrase him—you have taken the meager resources of the poor for your own benefit; you have trampled on the weak and
forced the lowly out of the way so you can build your mansions. That behavior makes you no different from the other nations, including your enemies. And in the case of Amos’s prophecy, the nation was invaded and the people taken into exile.
Jesus said much the same thing: “When the Son of Man comes…All the nations will be gathered before him…[and he will say] come you blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom
prepared for you….For I was hungry and you gave me food. I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink. I was a stranger and you welcomed me. I was naked and you gave me clothing. I was in prison and you visited me.” (Matthew 25:30ff)
We tend to take these as personal challenges. I should do this, and what I can’t do by myself, I should look to the church to develop a program that we can work on together.
Both are good. But Jesus said, “All the nations will be gathered together.” God judges our country first. And as followers of Jesus, we are charged with holding these values before our nation as the standard for our life together. “…and he will say, ‘Come
you blessed of my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you.’”
Peace,
Karen+

Jesus on the Front Page
Sundays through August 16, 9:00 a.m. – 9:50 a.m., Ross Room
In this weekly Sunday morning discussion of a current news story, participants reflect on how the world of that story calls us to live as faithful people. In a nonpartisan
reflection, we explore how we might be called to pray differently, think differently, or act differently in our private and public lives. We ask where God might be found in this story, as we notice signs of grace, engage the scriptures, and learn to name our
lament as well as our hope. Contact Clark Lemons at clemons@emory.edu.
