Dear saints,
Yesterday morning Kirk Rich, Zack Nyein, and I led a short broadcast wearing stupendous hats and sumptuous sweaters, with flashing lights to boot. We were having an ecclesiastically illegal Christmas carol sing-along – we at church, you at home, and the Archbishop of Canterbury none the wiser. Joy came on the scene a little early, and why not. Of all years, this is surely one when we should give joy some room to fill our hearts.
I have to say that standing at the back of that church, listening to Kirk play the heck out of our spectacular organ, I was keenly aware of how much I miss all of you in those pews. There is quite simply nothing to beat a packed All Saints’ on Christmas Eve, voices raised heavenward. I found myself lingering there, looking with wonder at the nativity window, light spilling in right when I needed it to.
All of it teaches me, once more, how the life of the church is a life of the heart. We will hold you in our hearts these days of Advent, waiting on Christ's light to find its way where it is most needed. This has been a long journey, and the road calls us on yet further. Keep the faith. Be of good courage. Love will bring us home again.
Peace, |

Sundays, December 6, 13, and 20, 9:00-9:55 a.m., on Zoom |

It is altogether tempting to account ourselves free of specific transgressions when confessing to one another. But from Paul, Augustine and Calvin to Jonathan Edwards, sin has been understood as a distortion of seeing from which none of us escape unaided. In the course of this class, we will use art history to discern the role of the conception of sin in informing and legitimating all forms of racism.”
