A Note From the Rector
Dear Saints,
Through the course of the past several weeks, a new group at All Saints', the MICAH Project, has formed and has invited us to ponder and engage one another in conversation about race and our hopes for racial healing. This Sunday, the third in a three-session series will explore Bryan Stevenson's book, Just Mercy. In it, Stevenson makes the case for mercy, "When you experience mercy, you learn things that are hard to learn otherwise. You see things you can't otherwise see; you hear things you can't otherwise hear. You begin to recognize the humanity that resides in each of us." As the prophet Micah extols, the people of God are called to lives of mercy. I pray, whether or not you are able to join the conversation this Sunday, that you will find new expressions for mercy in your life this coming week and in the weeks and months ahead. Blessings for the journey on.

Giving
When did American churches begin passing the offering plate during church services? Colonial American churches did not depend on voluntary, weekly giving from their members. Instead, as had been the case in Europe, the government supported churches; depending on churches to produce citizens of good character. This funding ceased years after the American Revolution. In the late 19th century the tradition of placing money in the plate each week became an act of worship and the way to support the ministry of the church. Even in this day of online payments, All Saints' still carries a budget line item for "plate offering." We thank you for your offering on Sundays.
