A Note From the Rector

Dear Saints,

Yesterday, communities around the world marked World Refugee Day, reflecting upon and raising awareness of the needs of refugee peoples across the globe. The UNHCR estimates that over 65 million people are currently living forced from their homes, either as refugees or internally displaced persons. It is easy to feel resigned to the impossibility of making a difference to such a vast human tragedy, yet what we know is that people's lives are changed for the better life by life, family by family, community by community. You and I know the call to be such a community in the lives of people we have come to know over the past quarter of a century through our Refugee Ministries. The lives of refugees as they have met and intertwined with ours at All Saints' have enriched us in boundless ways. The kinship we find in the lives of those who struggle at the margins of society can be among the most transformative gifts we can ever receive. I warmly invite you, not only to join us for this weekend at All Saints' for our Refugee Ministries Sunday, but to pray how your life, blessed as it is, might be a blessing to those who now call America home, yet from another shore. I give thanks for the extraordinary generosity of this parish, a gift we receive in God, in another, in friend and in stranger soon to become friend. Let us pray for such generosity to be witnessed in our world today, for all God's children.

Peace,

Refugee Ministries Sunday
Sunday, June 23, 11:15 a.m.-12:00 p.m.,

After the 10:00 a.m. worship service on Sunday, join our rector Simon Mainwaring for a panel discussion about issues affecting refugees with three guest speakers:

  • Mary Baxter, ESOL Coordinator of World Relief, a refugee agency that is a new partner of our Refugee Ministries program
  • Anamaliya, author of memoir, Terrorized in Rwanda, Healed by Grace, that describes her experience surviving the Rwandan genocide
We will also have an interfaith art exhibit that was created last week by children from Vacation Bible School and Refugee Ministries and a photo display of them creating the art together. Sunday's coffee will be from Refuge Coffee Co., a nonprofit coffee shop that provides intentional job training, mentorship, and community support in Clarkston. We invite you to stop by our table after the service on Sunday to learn more. We will have information and the reading materials used, and you can talk with EfM mentors, current students and graduates.
