How the Bible Came to Be: A History

This course is offered in partnership with the Candler Foundry at Emory University
The English Bible that we read today looks nothing like what was available to Jesus and the disciples. Almost everything that we now take for granted about the Bible – chapters, verses, paragraphs, translations, study notes, and even what books are included – is the result of a long and fascinating process. This course aims to tell the story of how the Bible can to be, from the earliest texts and traditions to modern translations and versions. Along the way, we will focus on the historical, theological, and technological factors that have shaped our modern notion of what the Bible is as well as how those factors impact the way we read Scripture today.

About the Instructor
Ryan Bonfiglio is an Assistant Professor in the Practice of Old Testament at Emory’s Candler School of Theology. He also is the Director of The Candler Foundry, a new initiative designed to make theological education accessible and engaging for the broader public. Prior to joining Candler’s faculty in 2018, he taught at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, GA and served as the John H. Stembler Scholar in Residence at the First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta. His teaching and research interests include biblical metaphors, Old Testament theology, the Sabbath, and ancient Near Eastern art. He is currently working on a book on the biblical theology of Sabbath (Westminster John Knox). His wife, Jamie, is an ordained pastor in the Presbyterian Church (USA) and together they have an energetic 7-year old son named Leo. Ryan suffers from a life-long love of Philadelphia sports.
