How the Bible Came to Be: A History

Sunday, 10/31/21 at 10:20am

Sundays, October 31, November 14, December 5, December 12, and December 19 from 10:20 to 11:05 a.m. in the Ross Room and online

This course is offered in partnership with the Candler Foundry at Emory University

The English Bible that we read today looks nothing like what was available to Jesus and the disciples. Almost everything that we now take for granted about the Bible – chapters, verses, paragraphs, translations, study notes, and even what books are included – is the result of a long and fascinating process. This course aims to tell the story of how the Bible can to be, from the earliest texts and traditions to modern translations and versions. Along the way, we will focus on the historical, theological, and technological factors that have shaped our modern notion of what the Bible is as well as how those factors impact the way we read Scripture today.

  • Week 1: From Traditions to Texts: Writing and Editing the Word of God
  • Week 2: The Earliest Translations: From the Septuagint to the Vulgate
  • Week 3: Sola Scriptura: The Reformation and the Origins of the English Bible
  • Week 4: Modern Translations: From the KJV to the NRSV
  • Week 5: The Big Business of Bible Publishing: The Curious Case of the Biblezine
